Over 300 travel agents and tour operators attended Derek Houston’s Spotlight on Africa workshops in Kampala Uganda and Nairobi Kenya from 23 – 26 June.

This is the 5th Consecutive year that Derek has organized Spotlight on Africa, and the most successful ever as the workshops were officially endorsed by The Kenya Association of Travel Agents (KATA) and KATO (The Kenya Association of Tour Operators). 27 Exhibitors from 10 different African countries participated.

The highlight of this year’s Spotlight was the presentation by South African Tourism on their new Africa TV campaign on CNN & DSTV.   SAT also were sponsors of the special South African lunches which included ‘Bunny Chows, Boerewors and Koeksisters.

Both Uganda and Kenya are vibrant outbound markets. Despite the problems affecting inbound tourism to Kenya and East Africa in general, outbound travel to global destinations continues to grow.

Kenya had the highest FDI for Africa in 2014 and Nairobi ranks as the third biggest African city in terms of  IATA ticket sales after JNB and Lagos.

In a recent report it was stated that more hotels are currently being built in Nairobi than any other African city –a testimony to the burgeoning corporate market in Nairobi.

South African Exhibitors at Spotlight included SAA, Rovos Rail, City Lodge, One&Only, Sun International, Tsogo Sun; Thompsons; Red Carnation Hotel Collection; Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre.

The next Spotlight on Africa workshops will be held in Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen in November targeting the Nordics market outbound market to Africa & Indian Ocean Islands .15 Exhibitors have already confirmed participation.
